Fr. Gene Sabio, MSC
Born on January 29, 1949 in Tubuñgan, Iloilo, the Philippines, Fr. Generoso “Gene” Sabio, MSC is the eighth of a total of ten children; the fourth died in his early teens, the fifth, in her 60’s and the tenth, at birth. He studied in the public elementary schools where English was the medium of instruction. He entered the minor seminary of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) in central Philippines and graduated from high school in 1965 on top of the class, thereby receiving the Insular Life Golden Eagle Award. As a young student he was active as assistant editor of the school organ of Sacred Heart Seminary, Angeles City. (1966-67).
He professed his first vows as a missionary of the Sacred Heart on June 29, 1968. He continued his studies in Philosophy and Theology at Ateneo de Manila University and Loyola School of theology in the same University. He was ordained to the priesthood in his own hometown, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental by Most Rev. Antonio Fortich, Bishop of Bacolod.
He has a degree of Master of Arts in Theology from Ateneo de Manila University (1980), and is a doctoral candidate in the same university. He has a training in educational management at De La Salle University, Manila for 3 trimesters (1983-1984), serving as class president of the MSEM (Master of Science in Educational Management) scholars. He received a scholarship to a Pastoral Communication course at Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (April-July, 1997).
After ordination he served as Guidance Counselor at Chevalier School, formerly Sacred Heart Seminary, Angeles city (1976-1979). His other major assignments include the following:
- Rector, Chevalier School--formerly Sacred Heart Seminary--(1979-1987);
- Pastor (parish priest) of Francis of Assisi and Sta. Quiteria Parish (1987-1989);
- MSC Novice Master (1989-1995);
- Administrator, MED (Media for Evangelization and Development), CFA (Communication Foundation for Asia) in1995-1999;
- President, Communication Foundation for Asia (May 1999 – November 1999);
- Assistant General of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (1999-2005). He took charge of 2 Generalate desks: Media and JPIC (Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation);
- Parochial Vicar, St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish (2005-2007);
- Pastor, St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church (2007 until the present).
The following were his other responsibilities: Pastoral Animator of CFA (1995-1999); Director of Chevalier Publishing and Printing Center, CFA (1995-1999); National Director of Lay MSC of the Chevalier family (men) (1995-1999); Provincial councilor of the MSC-Philippine (1987-1993).
He also served in the following capacity: alternate delegate of the religious priests to the San Fernando Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council (1980-1981), chairman of the association of Novice Masters (1989-91, 1994-95), board member of Philippine Printing Technical Foundation (1996-98), delegate to the 1999 MSC General Chapter (France), member of the Executive Committee of AEFJN (Africa-Europe Faith and Justice Network) in 2004-2005.
He was appointed Vicar Forane of Riverside Vicariate by Bishop Gerald Barnes on August 11, 2011.
