Eucharist to the Sick

Description
"Because the sick are prevented from celebrating the Eucharist with the rest of the community, the most important visits are those during which they receive Holy Communion. In receiving the body and blood of Christ, the sick are united sacramentally with the Eucharistic community from which the illness has separated them."

"When the Church cares for the sick, it serves Christ himself in the suffering of his Mystical Body."

Decree on Pastoral Care of the Sick (PCS) 1972Certificated Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may take Communion to the sick. Those who serve the sick on a regular basis receive specialized training in addition to the regular Extraordinary Minister training. Those persons who are new to the ministry accompany those who are more experienced.

St. Catherine's Parish serves the Catholic residents of Arlington Royale Assisted Living Facility, Chapman Convalescent Hospital, and Community Care Convalescent Hospital and Rehab Center, as well as parishioners who are home-bound. Teams of two and sometimes four visit the facilities on a regular basis, usually once a week, on Wednesdays for Community Care, and on Fridays for Arlington and Chapman. For the homebound, individual ministers serve at a per-arranged time that is set by the minister and the persons they visit.
The ministers to the sick attend Mass on the day they will bring Communion in order to obtain the hosts. A Communion Service is celebrated in one of two ways - within a Liturgy of the Word or in a brief form for use in more restrictive circumstances. Whenever possible, the service is celebrated communally, with a small gathering of the faithful, who are invited to participate in the readings and prayers.
